Feature Request: Article Summary

I hope this is the right place for feature request:

By adding a page, i miss a “summary” like other CMS have.
The summary would be displayed first, the content after hitting “next”.

cheers

This is for blog entries only though

10 CMS offer this since ages. To me, this is a show stopper.

Actually that is not true…

WordPress the most popular CMS in the world, doesn’t do what you’re asking for, even though I also asked for this feature I am not sure it is warranted either.

Can you give an example of what you’re trying to achieve so we can then help you achieve what you’re trying to achieve.

Your’re right, Wordpress can’t handle this too

I take a new customer as an example. This customer is doing his business in the health and wellness area. A lot of articles are explaining therapies and products very detailed. Therefore a summary or teaser makes really sense. If somebody is interested to read more about it, he would press the “Read more”-button to get the full article.

Mura handles this excellent, offering globally two text boxes to add a summary and the regular text.

Hi Martin

Why not to have a global setting TxtSummary limit to certain characters thats it.

The beauty about ContentBox is that it is also very easy to add features, just like WordPress. So that means you can very easily write a widget that pulls up the data, display the limited text and provide exactly what you want to do.

For example i have a widget at the moment that you can grab the top 3 articles, display this in a 3 column area and it will display the header if you so choose, or an image if one is attached (another custom filed needed for pages) and align it to your hearts desire and limit the text to a predefined number of characters. And display a more of your choosing.

If you are familiar with WordPress then you would know these type of themes, and ContentBox is very capable of doing this with just a small amount of work.

@Sana: This sounds perfect to me. Didn’t know, that this possible like this.

@Andrew:

Thanks for the information. I expected to see some basic stuff out of the box without creating a widget so soon…

Hello,

I like to come back to this feature, hoping that nobody gets annoyed

In terms of marketing and spreading ContentBox more over our planet, i think this feature should find his place in the core functionality of the CMS. This would give, e.g. if somebody evaluates a cms, an additional “tick” in his evaluation sheet.

I gave a short introduction into ContentBox to a customer recently, and i was asked, why the blog has an excerpt and the pages not. I answered this saying that ContentBox can easily extended with e.g. Widgets to satisfy all needs. The customer had also a short demo of “other” shortnamed cfml-based cms which supports this feature.

cheers

Create a ticket for it and take it to a vote.

Issue “Pages with Excerpt”

I’m coming up with something old. Unfortunately, my feature request got only one vote for a feature which i think is a important feature for a CMS. A future customer was really surprised to see, that an excerpt is not possible for pages. Before i try to figure it out by myself with a widget, i reopen this voting

If you think, that a page needs to have an excerpt, please vote for it here:

Many thanks.

Hi Martin, I gave it a vote.

George Murphy

Personally I don’t think pages need excerpts.

Could you give us an example where you think this is needed?

I agree with Andrew. However, one possible use case could be on a site like a college website (memories from an old job…). Think of the “teasers” you might find on the home page (for financial aid, sports, etc)…I could see it being nice to be able to use the excerpt from the page’s content there. Of course, in this same scenario, you’d probably want to define an image to use along with the excerpt, which would seem to go more down the road of a custom widget/custom field on a page.

In this particular case, we ended using something equivalent to a widget, as we found it difficult to train people to correctly use the excerpt functionality.

I agree an excerpt can be useful for any site that wants to list content on the home page or anything like that and wants a sort of “short description” to put next to a thumbnail that links to the full page. It would also be handy for the results page if you ever built any sort of non-keyword search into the site.

Thanks!
